In the early ’70s, five Californian teenagers made a ritual out of gathering every day at 4:20 pm to smoke together, thus planting the seeds for the day during which we annually celebrate the highs and the lows of life (mostly the highs though). Craft Recordings’ cratedigger imprint Jazz Dispensary, which highlights the finest jazz and funk deep cuts from Craft’s catalog, is giving 4/20 the celebration it deserves.
Kicking off this smokiest of holidays is a brand-new playlist entitled Pure Grooves. Inspired by the new age sounds that took all the parents by storm in the ’90s, this playlist brings together a selection of works that operate on the far corners of the sonic spectrum of jazz, from the avant-garde vocal stylings of Flora Purim to the synths of Jean-Jacques Perrey. Jazz Dispensary will be hosting a listening party for the playlist on Twitter, kicking off at 4:20 PM Pacific, where users will be able to join in using the hashtag #JD420 and experience the scintillating sounds of Pure Grooves together.
On the Jazz Dispensary store, a new “Pick your own LP” bundle will be made available, allowing customers to pair a vinyl of their choice from the store with a Jazz Dispensary t-shirt and slipmat.
Jazz Dispensary recently announced The Dank D-Funk Blend Vol. 2, coming June 12th for the first RSD Drop, which sees Grimey’s Nashville co-owner Doyle Davis return to JD for a second selection of tracks, following the critically acclaimed first edition. The first volume of The Dank D-Funk Blend, which was made available for RSD Black Friday 2019, was a blow-out success, quickly selling out at stores all over the world. The Jazz Dispensary team has unearthed the 50 last copies of the LP for the Birmingham, AL-based record store Seasick Records, who are offering the album exclusively as part of a bundle, paired with their brand-new CBD-infused kombucha Berry Berry Dank, made in collaboration with Harvest Roots Ferments, and two vegan burritos from Burrito Punx, which are sure to satisfy any kind of munchie cravings. This combo pack will be made available for pick-up starting on April 20. For more information, visit seasickbham.com.
In other restock news, Vinyl Me, Please has uncovered very limited quantities of the five titles featured in their Jazz Dispensary collaboration of 2020. The titles being restocked include Jack DeJohnette’s Sorcery, Idris Muhammad’s Black Rhythm Revolution!, Bernard Purdie’s Purdie Good, Leon Spencer’s Where I’m Coming From, and David Axelrod’s Heavy Axe. All five LPs will be made available as a bundle as well as individually at 10 AM MST on April 20. VMP is also launching a very special giveaway with Dark Matter Coffee on the same day, allowing two lucky winners to receive all five titles, bundled with Dark Matter Coffee’s Devil’s Lettuce coffee, Honey Bear “Dripper”, rolling papers, and a mug.
